We bring to you, Ensemble Le Chardon, based in northern Germany. The flexible ensemble, ranging from chamber music to full baroque orchestra, has made numerous CD recordings and live radio broadcasts; their CD with tenor Markus Brutscher was hailed as the highlight of the months selection in the leading German Early Music Concerto. Le Chardon means the Thistle: performing on period instruments creates a different sound world, with piquant timbers, which not only convey beauty but a deeper range of our emotions.

The Ellys family held land in many parts of Lincolnshire. Ellys Manor House at Great Ponton was built by Anthony Ellys, a prosperous Tudor wool merchant of the Staple of Calais. The familys connection with Nocton came after the Civil War. Richard Towneley, impoverished by fines for recusancy and for loyalty to the Crown, sold the estate to Charles, 2nd Lord Stanhope of Harrington. On Stanhopes death the estate passed to his relation, Sir William Ellys, Baronet, of Welbourn. A lawyer who held the office of Solicitor General during the Commonwealth, he died a bachelor in 1680, leaving the estate to his nephew and namesake, the son of Sir Thomas Ellys, Baronet, of Wyham. The younger Sir William Ellys, Bart, erected an impressive monument in the to Nocton Church in memory of his uncle. Sir Richard Ellys, Bart, was a scholar, antiquarian and theologian. He collected a vast library of 10,000 books. On his death his widow sent his library to his cousins the Hobarts at Blicking Hall in Norfolk, where they can be seen today in the Long Gallery, which was specially fitted out to receive them. Richards heir was his second cousin George Hobart, who became the 3rd Earl of Buckingham on the death of his brother. Already residing at Nocton, the 3rd Earl continued living there rather than at Blicking, as did his son, Lord Robert, 4th Earl. He was a soldier and politician, who in 1793 was appointed Governor of Madras. His monument is at the west end of the south aisle of Nocton Church.
On Roberts death in 1816, the Nocton Estate passed to Roberts daughter Sarah Albinia, who had recently married Frederick John Robinson, MP for Ripon, later Viscount Goderich. He was Prime Minster for less than a year, and his effigy and tomb chest stand by the altar in Nocton Church. She rebuilt the church in his memory, assisted by their son, the Marques of Ripon and later Earl de Grey. All Saints Nocton was consecrated in 1862. It is considered to be the finest Gothic Revival church in Lincolnshire.
That is why this splendid building makes our perfect venue.
All of the above will have done their bit, now it is time for us to do our bit. Lets celebrate!!!
