“…. a ballet to please virtually everyone. Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet is arguably the best treatment, at least in the West, of Prokofiev’s celebrated ballet score” The New York Times
Not seen in the UK for 27 years, Olivier Award winner Stuttgart Ballet returns with John Cranko’s spectacular Romeo and Juliet as part of the Spring Dance at the London Coliseum Season, set to the Prokofiev score, from Tuesday 25th – Sunday 30th March, 2008.
Ballet in Stuttgart has a history rich in traditions whose origins go back to the 17th century Württemberg Court.
What is now known as Stuttgart Ballet, has remained at the forefront of international dance for more than 40 years. The breathtaking level of dance skills and the stylistically broad repertoire of the company, not only attracts audiences, but also dance talent from all over the world: around 25 nationalities are represented amongst the students, corps dancers and soloists.
From 1976 to 1996 Márcia Haydée directed the company: she created the role of Juliet in the premiere of this production and will return to London with the Stuttgart Ballet in 2008 to dance the role of Lady Capulet.
In 1961, choreographer John Cranko (1927-1973) was appointed ballet director of Stuttgart Ballet, heralding a new era in the history of the company. With three legendary new works he ingeniously renewed the genre of the full-length narrative ballet: Romeo and Juliet (1959, new version 1962), Onegin (1965, new version 1967) and The Taming of the Shrew (1969).
John Cranko’s production of Romeo and Juliet is considered one of the definitive versions. Based on Shakespeare’s world famous tale of two lovers in Renaissance Italy who find themselves caught between their feuding families, Cranko’s vividly etched characters and breathtaking choreography bring this tragedy to splendid life. The ballet, set to Serge Prokofiev’s lush score, contains dramatic roles for the young Juliet and her impetuous lover Romeo, for Romeo’s hot-headed friend Mercutio and for Juliet’s bullying relative Tybalt. An abundance of soloist roles provide the entire company with ample opportunity to display their acting and dancing abilities. Jürgen Rose’s magnificent sets and costumes enhance the action of the ballet.
Cranko first choreographed Romeo and Juliet in 1958 for the La Scala Ballet in Milan, Italy with Carla Fracci in the leading role. In 1962 he reworked and refined it for his own Stuttgart company, which presented the world premiere in Stuttgart with Marcia Haydée and Ray Barra in the title roles. Since then, Cranko’s production has entered the repertory of more than ten companies worldwide, including the National Ballet of Canada, the Australian Ballet, the Finnish National Ballet and the Ballet of the La Scala Opera House in Milan.
Canadian born Reid Anderson, formerly a Cranko soloist and director of the National Ballet of Canada from 1989 to 1996, is continuing Stuttgart Ballet’s success story in the role of artistic director since 1996 with a programme schedule which leaves creative space to the younger generation of choreographers and also cultivates the Cranko heritage.
Stuttgart Ballet forms part of the Spring Dance at the London Coliseum Season, an exciting new collaboration between Askonas Holt, Raymond Gubbay and Sadler’s Wells. Over five years this partnership will bring to London many of the world’s great ballet companies, taking advantage of the scale of the London Coliseum to present companies rarely seen in the UK. The opening 2008 season features New York City Ballet; Carlos Acosta with Guests from The Royal Ballet; and Sylvie Guillem & Russell Maliphant in PUSH.

Did you know that Wang-Ba means internet cafe in Chinese? It is also the title of an exciting installation by the Berlin-based artists Christoph Wachter and Mathias Jud which will be showcased at the Manchester Art Gallery from 1 to 5 May 2008 as part of the Futuresonic Festival.
The Goethe-Institut Manchester has much pleasure in inviting you to attend a private tour of the installation and a talk with the artists (in German):
Venue: Manchester Art Gallery (admission free)
Wang-Ba
The world is rapidly shrinking into a global village. It doesn’t matter if we live in Stuttgart , Sheffield or Shanghai , we wear Italian clothes, watch Hollywood films and eat sushi so the actual places themselves start to become unimportant: even the internet café itself is now being superceded by wifi. The unique identity and role of Chinatown as a complex socio-cultural world is also not immune from this trend in the face of global trade links and goods. Wang-Ba examines these transitions and reconstructs a social space as open meeting place.
The artists hope very much that you will be able to join them for this special guided tour and discussion in German to explore the complex forms of linguistic, visual and cultural transfer.
Christoph Wachter and Mathias Jud live and work in Berlin . In their work the artists explore the limits of self presentation. Their projects picidae and Zone*Interdite attracted critical acclaim in international media and received several awards at international art exhibitions.
