“Writing Wrongs: The Nazi Era in Fiction”

  The Wiener Library has pleasure in inviting you to the fourth lecture in the series “Writing Wrongs: The Nazi Era in Fiction”:
D M Thomas on “The White Hotel”
Chaired by Eva Hoffman

D M Thomas is a British poet and novelist who has published thirteen novels and several verse collections. His third novel, The White Hotel, was published in 1981 and became an international bestseller, translated into 30 languages. The White Hotel was nominated for the Booker Prize, and was awarded the LA Times Fiction Prize, the Cheltenham Prize and the P.E.N. Prize. Thomas is the winner of a Cholmondeley Award for poetry and the Orwell Prize for his biography of Solzhenitsyn. He is also a noted translator of the Russian poets Pushkin and Akhmatova. He lives in Cornwall.

Eva Hoffman grew up in Cracow, Poland, before emigrating to Canada and then the United States. After receiving her PhD in English and American literature from Harvard University, she worked as senior editor at The New York Times. Subsequently, she studied psychoanalysis, and has written and lectured internationally on issues of exile, memory, Polish-Jewish history, politics and culture. She has taught literature and creative writing at the University of East Anglia, Columbia, MIT and Hunter College. She is the author of seven books, which include Lost in Translation, After Such Knowledge and Time.

Following the extremely successful visit last year to Bonn / Bad Honnef to trace the footsteps of Konrad Adenauer it was suggested that the next cultural experience for BGA members should be a visit to Munich.

A cultural visit to Munich has now been arranged by Ute Wegener, the former BGA Executive Committee member who successfully organized the last year’s visit and is now living in Munich, and Mike Bright, BGA member.

BGA Parliamentary Day

BGA Parliamentary Day
This year the BGA Parliamentary Day will be on Monday 14 June, just weeks after the General Election. The former deputy Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Lord Heseltine has agreed to be our guest of honour and will be talking about the likely impact of the new government's policies on international and British-German relations. The event will be over lunch in the House of Lords.

AGM 2010

On Tuesday 20 July 2010, the BGA will hold its Annual General Meeting at 6:00 pm at 34 Belgrave Square. The event is open to all Members and is the occasion when the Officers of the Assocation are elected. The Association's audited accounts are also presented for Members to inspect and approve.
